Windows 11 Home vs Pro: which edition do you actually need?

BitLocker, Remote Desktop, Hyper-V, and domain join are the four features that decide this for most buyers.

The short answer

If you use your PC for browsing, work documents, media, and gaming, Windows 11 Home covers everything you touch. If you encrypt drives, connect to your machine remotely, run virtual machines, or join a company domain, you need Windows 11 Pro.

What Pro adds

Pro is not a faster version of Windows. The desktop, performance, gaming stack, and update cadence are identical. What changes is the set of management and security features that are unlocked.

  • BitLocker full-disk encryption with recovery key management
  • Remote Desktop host — connect into this PC, not just out of it
  • Hyper-V virtual machines and Windows Sandbox
  • Group Policy Editor and Azure AD or Active Directory domain join
  • Assigned Access and other kiosk-mode deployment tools

How to decide in 30 seconds

Ask one question: will anything other than a person sitting at this desk need to manage or reach this machine? If yes, buy Pro. If no, Home is the correct purchase and the price difference is better spent on a security subscription.

You are not locked in either way. Windows supports an in-place edition upgrade — entering a Pro key in Settings converts an existing Home installation without reinstalling.

Check the license type before you buy anywhere

Edition is only half the purchase. License type determines whether the key can be moved to a replacement PC. Retail licenses are transferable after deactivation; OEM licenses are tied to the original hardware. Every Licenseora listing states the license type, device count, and activation platform in a details table before checkout.
