How to activate Windows 11 with a product key
Activation takes about two minutes when it works — and here is exactly what to do when it doesn't.
Before you start
Have your 25-character product key ready, confirm the PC is connected to the internet, and check that the installed edition matches the key. A Pro key will not activate a Home installation until you change the product key, which triggers the edition upgrade automatically.
Activation steps
The whole flow lives in one Settings page.
- Open Settings, then System, then Activation.
- Expand Change product key and select Change.
- Enter the 25-character key, including the dashes.
- Select Next, then Activate.
- Wait for the confirmation banner, then reboot once.
Common errors and what they mean
Error 0xC004F050 usually means the key does not match the installed edition — verify Home versus Pro. Error 0xC004C003 means the activation server declined the key; retry after a few minutes, then use the phone activation option Windows offers. Error 0x803FA067 typically appears after major hardware changes and is resolved with the Activation Troubleshooter while signed into a Microsoft account.

Link your license to a Microsoft account
After activation, sign in with a Microsoft account so the license is linked to it. If you later replace a motherboard or rebuild the machine, the Activation Troubleshooter can reapply the digital license from that account in a couple of clicks.
